Tivoli back on top with
work-man-like win Champions Tivoli Gardens clawed their way back
to the top of the Digicel Premier League (DPL) brushing aside
Humble Lions 2-0 in a rescheduled at the Effortville Community
Centre yesterday.
Tivoli, which started the
day in third spot on 27 points, leapfrogged both St Georges and
Harbour View into top spot on 30 points.
National striker Navion
Boyd opened the scoring for Tivoli in the 26th minute with his
sixth goal of the season after firing home from close range.
He is now joint second on
the goalscoring tally alongside the Waterhouse pair of Irvino
English and Kevin Lamey and behind leader Devon Hodges on 10
goals.
Tivoli’s find of the
season, Owen Powell, notched his fifth goal of the season and
Tivoli’s second of the match in the 43rd minute. The tall and
powerfully built youngster striker combined well with Jameel
Thompson before calmly firing past goalkeeper Damion Crooks.
Humble Lions, with their
seventh loss of the season, remained second to last with 12
points, but failed in their bid to climb above 10th placed team
Village United on 13 points.
Meanwhile Harbour View
which could only muster a 0-0 draw in their rescheduled match
with Sporting Central Academy at Brancourt in Clarendon, stayed
in second on 29 points.
Portland’s St Georges,
which started the day in front on 29 points, slipped two places
to third with an inferior goal difference to Harbour View.
Harbour View with their
fifth drawn game of the season, failed in their attempt to
regain the league lead in what is turning out to be an
intriguing battle at the top in which the lead has changed hands
three times.
Despite earning only one
point, Sporting Central moved up a place to eighth with 16
points, the same as Rivoli United of St Catherine, but with a
better goal difference.
The competition continues
on Sunday with fifth-placed Waterhouse hosting third-placed St
Georges in the feature encounter.
In the other match-ups:
Tivoli Gardens play Sporting Central Academy; Village tackle
Portmore United; Rivoli United travel to Arnett Gardens; Humble
Lions versus Boys’ Town and Harbour View entertain August Town. |
