Wadadah FC kept their slim promotional hopes alive after clipping August Town 2-1 at Jarrett Park but Humble Lions grabbed pole position with a 1-1 draw with Brazil FC. Mark Williams converted a 79th minute penalty as Wadadah pulled off a crucial home win to assume third position in the four-team group.. Oneil Selvin had given the St James outfit a 50th minute lead before Donovan Bernard equalized in the 73rd minute for August Town. Anything other than a win for Wadadah could have meant disaster but the Daniel Ricketts-coached team rose to the occasion and delivered a very, very important victory. They moved to four points from four games, three behind August Town and four behind new leaders Humble Lions. With two sets of games remaining, Wadadah will be eyeing a maximum 10 points with games against Humble Lions and Brazil to come. It was also sweet revenge for Wadadah which loss 0-2 to August Town in their first game. August Town with their first loss of the campaign stayed second with seven points and cannot afford any more slip ups as Wadadah is breathing down their necks.
At the York Town Community Centre in Clarendon, homesters Humble Lions had to come from behind to snatch a 1-1 draw with Brazil and earn a crucial point. Dwayne Goparlsingh stunned the home crowd with a third minute goal as the St Ann outfit looked set to register their first win of the playoffs. But Kimroy Davis equalized from the penalty spot in the 72nd minute for his second goal in two games to earn a monumental point for the Clarendon team. With two teams earning promotion to the premier league, Humble Lions took another step closer with eight points inclusive of two wins and two draws. Brazil inched to two points while bring up the rear but still harbours thought of qualifying if they can win their two remaining games against Wadadah and August Town. They would finish with eight points but would have to pray the other results went in their favour with Humble Lions beating both August Town and Wadadah. The playoffs continue on Sunday with August Town hosting Humble Lions and Wadadah travelling to Brazil. The top two teams will replace Meadhaven United and Reno FC in the 12-team Digicel Premier League next season. |
