AUGUST TOWN CROWNED SUPER LEAGUE CHAMPIONS
August
Town were crowned Champions of the 2008/2009 Claro/KSAFA Super
League competition following their 6-0 drubbing of eighth place
Maverley/Hughenden at the UWI Bowl on Saturday.
A
brace from Nicholas Smith (78th & 84th)
and substitute Nicholas McCreath (80th & 87th)
as well as Ezekiel Shaw (9th) and Aphas Bernard (63rd)
were the scorers for the new champions.
Evidently, August Town were the most impressive candidate to
walk away with the title after winning 14 games, drawing 7 and
losing 1 to their rival Cavalier Soccer Club. Additionally they
have scored a whopping 53 goals and conceded a mere 9 from a
total of twenty-two games.
In
fact August Town must be thankful for their good goal scoring
exploits as the title was decided on goal difference after their
rival Cavalier Soccer Club turned up the heat on them in the
latter stages of the competition.
August
Town will represent the Confederation of Kingston & St. Andrew
in the Jamaica Football Federation’ s (JFF) National Premier
League playoffs slated to begin on May 20, 2009.
Cavalier on the other hand, although winning their last
encounter by 8-0 against the demoted Police Nationals through a
hatrick from the league’s top goal scorer, Locksley Thompson (49th,
68th & 79th), and one a piece from Kemel
Mullings (46th), Phillip Riley (48th),
Oneil Morrison (52nd), Richard Harris (74th)
and Marvin Stewart (85th) was not enough to secure
the title.
Cavalier has won 15 games, drew 4 and loss 3. Additionally, they
have scored five goals less than the title holders and must have
been disheartened to have given up 19 goals in their twenty-two
encounters.
In
other games on the day, Santos finished third after drawing
their game against fourth place Jamaica Defence Force, 1-1.
Fifth place Bull Bay clipped relegated Liguanea United 1-0.
Constant Spring defeated Duhaney Park 3-1 to finished 6th
and 9th place in the standing respectively.
Mountain View survived the drop after holding off Real Mona 1-0
who was placed seventh.
August
Town will walk away with $200,000 in prize monies while Cavalier
will receive $150,000; Santos - $100,000 and Jamaica Defence
Force - $70,000 at a presentation ceremony to be announced.
