NPL 2010/2011 Round #1

Former champion Boys’ Town grabbed the early lead of the Digicel Premier League (DPL) with an exciting 4-2 win over St Georges yesterday at Collie Smith Drive.
With five of the six games ending in victories, Boys’ Town which scored the biggest win, soared to the top of the standing.
The Red Brigade sounded an early warning to the rest of the league dispatching last season’s fourth-placed team with disdain after racing to a 4-0 lead.
Both Dean Thompson and Anthony Dawes grabbed two goals each. Thompson opened the scoring in the 36th minute and got his second in the 63rd minute.
But it was left back, Dawes which stole the show with a 40 metre screamer in the 42nd minute which is already a goal of the season contender.
He then completed his double in the 81st minute with another long range effort, as Boys’ Town was coasting to victory.
But national defender Jermaine Taylor banged in a freekick in the 84th minute after going close minutes earlier. Shawn Hunter then made it 4-2 in the 87th minute and brought some respectability to the scoreline.
With Boys’ Town surging to the top, St Georges are at the bottom in 12th place without a point.

Meanwhile defending champion Harbour View left it late to beat 10-men Humble Lion 1-0 at the Compound in the late kickoff.
John-Ross Edwards saw his 40metres freekick sailed over the head of former national goalkeeper Shawn Sawyers in the 82nd minute.
Humble Lion showed a lot of character holding the champion with eight minutes remaining after battling with 10 men after defender Kirk Duckworth picked up his second yellow card on the stroke of half time.
Harbour View are fourth also with three points while Clarendon’s Humble Lion occupy eight spot.

At the Drax Hall in St Ann, newcomer Benfica FC was firmly welcomed to top flight football crashing 1-3 to Tivoli Gardens.
It was a dramatic entrance for Benfica which ended the game with 10 men after Ramja Martin saw red in the 80th minute.
Christopher Jackson opened the scoring for Tivoli in the 16th minute for the first goal of the season. National player Kaemmar Daley doubled their advantage in the 64th minute before Michael Spence made it 3-0 three minutes from time. Earlier last season’ MVP Navion Boyd missed a penalty then Damion James pulled one back for Benfica in the 93rd minute.
Last season’s runner-up Tivoli Gardens are up to second while Benfica inversely are second from bottom.

At Brancourt, Waterhouse scored a important 2-0 away win over Sporting Central Academy and moved into third spot.
Goals by Kemar Thomas and veteran Vincent Earle in the 28th and 43rd minutes respectively as Waterhouse made a positive start unlike last season where they really struggled.

Portmore United crept into fourth spot with a close 1-0 win over the promoted Reno at Frome.
New signee and former National Under-20 striker Alonzo Adlam scored the winner in the 43rd minute.
In a clash of former champions Portmore got the perfect start after really struggled last season and this should be a morale boaster for the St Catherine outfit.

In the only drawn game of the round, home team Village United had to come from behind twice for a share of the points at the Elliston Wakeland Centre.
Arnett new signing Kirk Ramsey formerly of Rivoli United, twice gave the advantage in the 33rd and 51st minutes for a dream debut.
But Village failed to surrender as national player Troy Smith converted from the spot in the 37th minute and Fitzroy Campbell pulled them level for the second time in the 86th minute.
With a share of the points, Arnett and Village are sixth and seventh respectively in mid table.
The DPL will take a one week break to accommodate Jamaica’s International Friendlies between Costa Rica and Peru on September 5 and 7..
